"The Scream" and "Madonna" stolen from the Munch Museum last August may have been destroyed. The paintings were burnt in order to destroy evidence, Norwegian newspaper "Dagbladet" reported, citing criminal sources and a top secret police report.

German Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger has been elected the 265th pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He took the name Pope Benedict XVI and will be installed to his post on Sunday. Colleagues voted the 78-year-old Bavarian prelate last night as successor to Pope John Paul II, who died on April 2 at the age of 84.
